War of 1812

On June 26, 1814 the Battle of St. Leonard Creek took place at what is now the site of Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum. In this fierce battle British ships, boats, and rocket barges fought against the war barges of the Chesapeake Flotilla supported by gun batteries on what is now Park property. JPPM is working to make this struggle better known to the public through several different ways.

Archaeology

1812 Tavern Night

In 1977 the submerged wreck of the flagship of the Chesapeake Flotilla was discovered in the Patuxent River buried under five feet of silt. This discovery was the start of the work to find the submerged wrecks of the Chesapeake Flotilla that eventually became the Chesapeake Flotilla Project (CFP). The goals of the CFP are not limited to just doing underwater archeology, but also to help the public understand the War of 1812 in Maryland. Many different institutions are participating in this effort to recover the vessels and educate the public about the War of 1812.
